2nd Military Cemetery of Portianos
The village of Portianos, during World War I, was the base of the British for the devastating Gallipolis campaign. Next to the church of “Isodia tis Theotokou” in the village, between August 1915 and 1920, many Allied forces soldiers who were returning heavily wounded on the battlefront were buried.
During your visit you can see the 352 graves of British, French, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Egyptians and Indians, aged 17 to 56, which are now in the 2nd Portianos Military Cemetery and are an emotional tribute to those who died away from their homelands.
