Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing
The “Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing” was founded on 2006 and presents to the public the history of the Koutalianoi (people from Koutali) and their sponge diving skills, as they lived and practiced it at their homeland and at Limnos.
It is a historical route divided into three thematic units. “The life of Koutalianoi before their uprooting”, “Sponge fishing at New Koutali on Limnos” and “The Archaeological Collection”.
Heirlooms and pictures from the marine life of Koutalianoi at Propontida and equipment and objects regarding sponge diving are on display, as well as archaeological treasures that were collected from the bottom of the sea during their voyages.
