Panagia Kakaviotissa
A church without a roof, highly impressive, built in a cave on Kakavo Mountain about 6km from downtown Myrina. Access up to a point is possible by car, and then a path will lead you towards the wild beauty of the mountain summit.
The site is estimated to have been chosen by ascending monks in 1300, and to this day, this secessionist spot, acts as a sanctuary for those who want to isolate and pray.
In 1305, it was owned by the Megali Lavra Monastery, when monks from Agios Efstratios wanted to protect themselves from the Turks' raids. Over the years, the monks passed away and the only remainder decided to move to the Holy Mountain. Before leaving, he entrusted the holy artwork of the Virgin Mary, "Rose the Amaranton", to a shepherd of the Moumtzis family and asked him to convey it for the ceremony every Easter Tuesday. The herder agreed to the monk's desire with devotion, so to this day in the chapel only one ceremony takes place per year, on Easter Tuesday, when the artwork of the Virgin Mary, still held by the Moumtzis family, is conveyed.
