Portianou is located between Tsimandria and Pedino, 16 km away from Myrina. The land name is of Latin origin, translated to new port. It was named after an old port on the southeast side of the village that was used as an intermediate station of the Moudros bay.
Admirable two floored mansions, decorated with stone handicraft, give a special character to this historic area. In one of those mansions the “Historical Folklore Museum of Portiano” is hosted.
During the campaign of Gallipoli, Winston Churchill established his headquarter into one of these marvelous mansions located at the entrance of the village.
The impressive temple dedicated to Theotokos Incomes was built in 1835 on a small hill. Lit at night, it offers a special sight, as it is visible from the surrounding areas. Just a few steps away the 2nd Military Cemetery of Portiano can be found.
