One of the largest villages of Limnos, just 11 km east of Myrina, which was named probably by a landlord of the area called Konteas. It took its official current name in 1940.
The plane trees located at the village's entrance were planted in 1912 to celebrate the liberation of Limnos from the Turkish occupation.
The hill full of pines, the windmills, the ancient stone-built mansions of the shipowners of the 19th and 20th century all add up to an area with authentic beauty and finesse.
At Kontias the traditional and modern ways of life are gracefully mixed. Paved alleys, the stone dwell, the kali faucet, renovated stone-built houses, distilleries, cheese factories, grocery stores, taverns, candy stores, cafes, bars and excellent tourist resorts are all available.
The “Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art” provides a grand collection of paintings by prestigious artists. A lot of temples are scattered around the village. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the temple of Agios Dimitrios (1867) and the temple of Agios Ioannis Prodromos.
