The castle of Kotsinas
Foscari Navigajoso, Enetian duke and feudal ruler of Limnos, in 1210, seeking to protect the area, built a castle of about 4 acres, at the top of a 20-meter hill high above sea. Its fortifications reached six meters, and around it there was a moat which connected to the sea.
The stronghold in the 15th century was heavily attacked by Turks culminating in the victorious battle of Kotsinas in 1475.
The castle finally passes into the hands of the Turks in 1479, after the Enetians granted the island and remained in their rule until the 1655, when it was reclaimed by the Enetians. In the years of Turkish occupation inside the castle, a church was built dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which today is the temple of the Zoodohos Pigi.
When the Enetians finally left the island in 1657, they destroyed the fortifications of the castle and today only a few parts of the fortification from the old northern foundations are saved by the seaside.
