The Sanctum of the Cavirians
A well-hidden place known only to the initiated. The place where Cavirians were worshiped was discovered across the ancient town of Hephaestia on the foreland of Chloe. The first archaeological excavations were carried out in 1937 until 1939 by the Italian School of Archaeology at Athens.
The sanctum was composed of big initiation rooms where the hidden Cavirian Sacraments were performed. The current findings have highlighted at least three different historical periods based on the dating of the buildings and their style.
The archaic sanctum is dated back to the beginning of the 7th century BC and was destroyed during the second half of the same century, probably by a powerful earthquake.
The Hellenistic sanctum is dated around the 2nd century BC. It was looted and burned down during the Roman attack between the 2nd and 3rd century AD.
The late Roman sanctum is dated around the 3rd century AD. Its destruction implies and the end of this sanctum. It is rumored that it was destroyed by the mania of the first Christians in the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th century AD.
