Kotsinas is a small fishing village on the north side of the island, 23 km away from Myrina and 11 km away from the town of Moudros. Up until 2011 it was populated by 6 people. Nowadays it is occupied only in the summer by vacationers.
It acts as a certain destination for visitors that want to taste fresh fish and lobsters by the sea in one of the many fish taverns located on the port.
History
Kotsinas' first mention is made in 1136 as a safe port with trading market, thus replacing Hephaestia, after its decline, as a shopping center on the northern side of the island. Its name originated from the distinguishing red color of the soil in the area, resembling the “Terra Lemnia” that used to be extracted from a nearby location.
Its population rose during the Enetian occupation (1207-1276), when in 1210, the Enetians built the castle in order to protect the area. Kotsinas began being abandoned after 1657, when the Enetians destroyed the fortifications of the castle before they departure, causing its inhabitants to feel vulnerable and move to safer locations.
