Hephaestia
Hephaestia, the biggest and oldest town of Lemnos (1000 BC - 1200 AD), was discovered by the Italian School of Archaeology at Athens after excavations were conducted from 1926 until 1936.
According to the historic findings, Hephaestia’s prime lasted from the 7th until the 1st century BC. It was named in the honor of Hephaestos, Greek god of metallurgy, who was thought to be the protector of the city. The excavations brought to light a sanctuary dedicated to the Great Mother Limnos, necropolises, baths, a big construction – palace, wells and a large number of objects that are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Myrina.
The most important monument that was discovered is the ancient theater of the Hellenistic period which is classified as one of the most ancient from the Greek world and dated between the late 5th and early 4th century BC.
Hephaestia was abandoned definitively in the 13th century because of the natural disaster that its port suffered.
