Chortarolimni

Chortarolimni is a coastal, seasonal, brackish swamp spanning measured at 2.300 acres. It is located on the east side of the island between the Kontopouli and Kalliopi villages.
It is declared a protected area of the “Natura 2000” network since it is one of the most important wetlands of Limnos.
Its waters withdraw during the summer months leaving behind a layer of salt. The rest of the year many rare and endangered species of birds can be found, some of which form the avifauna of Limnos, while others are endemic.
Rich low vegetation fills the area. The curbs, which are located towards the sea, are bare of vegetation because of the powerful winds that blow on the region.
