Kakanoures
Kakanoi, kakanoures, or kakaneria are the names of the custom of the fires that revives every year in Limno on June 23, the eve of Agios Ioannis' feast.
According to tradition, fire purifies evil and marks a new beginning, so every year in the villages, big fires are erected, with the May Day wreaks thrown at them by the doors of the houses and the boldest ones hurdle them first, and when the fire settles down a little, the rest follow.
In the old years, the Limnians who were engaged in the harvest were performing this ritual to burn the fleas and bugs they brought over them from straw and as they were jumping over the fire they were saying: "Out with the fleas and bugs, in the rose of gold."
