British and French allies fought for the opening of the Dardanelles to secure a sea crossing to Russia. The coalition headquarter was set up in the village of Portianos where the operation was planned and used as the basis for logistics, training, and medical care of the soldiers.
The port of Moudros was the main base of the military forces flooding its bay with 200 warships, while a seaplane landing had been built on its southern beach at the current "Airport" site.
