Since the beginning of the 20th century, on the island of Limnos the white grape variety of Moschato Alexandrias is broadly cultivated. The area of origin is possibly North Africa. The hot climate and the favorable weather conditions of the island made it possible to be acclimatized and prosper in the volcanic soil of Limnos. Typical feature of this grape variety is the distinctive aroma, with essence of apricot and mint whilst it has rich body. A certain choice for the table since it can complement a large number of dishes and is soft on the palate. Moschato is also an excellent choice to explore the magic world of dessert and sparkling wines.
In 1971 Moschato Limnou PDO for the sweet wines and in 1982 Limnos wine PDO were established. In 2011 the production of red wines from the grape variety Limnio (Kalabaki) was allowed along with the production of sweet red wines of Kalabaki and Moschato Alexandrias.
